I’m really strongly against it. I think it’s too much of an expenditure. What do you think Jack?
Jack
Actually, I think Mark might be right. Wouldn’t it be better if we improved the company’s image with the consumer?
Yuki
Well, that’s not the way I see it. Given the current economic situation, it’s not feasible. We don’t have the money.
Jack
I understand your point, but marketing the company wisely now will help us gain market share in the future.

練習

Activity 1: Think about whether the company from the dialogue should increase their marketing budget. Try to think of as many points for or against the proposal and then discuss with your tutor.

Activity 2: You and your tutor are going to debate whether Japanese companies should adopt a whistle-blowing policy.
・ a clearly-defined procedure for reporting issues.

・ guaranteed immunity for whistleblowers.
Choose a side and think of reasons for/against such policies. Your tutor will choose the opposing side. Switch roles after you debate for 5 minutes.
