There are many types of natural disasters that occur throughout the world. Often it depends on your location. For example, in parts of the USA there are many tornados and in some areas there are earthquakes. Other disasters include hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and floods.
One of the most famous disasters in history happened in the city of Pompeii in the year 79. Pompeii was a Roman city located in Italy at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, which is a volcano. The city was almost completely destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted and a huge boiling cloud of ash covered the city. Today Pompeii is a world heritage site and you can visit the city and see where the people died instantly and were buried in the houses and streets of Pompeii.
Another famous disaster was The Great Fire of London. This terrible fire happened in September 1666. The fire started in a local bakery on a street called Pudding Lane. A total of 70,000 homes were destroyed. The problem was that the streets of London were so narrow and the houses were made from wood with thatched roofs. This caused the fire to spread quickly with the wind. Eventually, London was re-built and today there is much less chance of such a disaster.
