The Incomparable Ichiro Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame

マリナーズなどで活躍したイチローさんが米野球殿堂入りした。1月16日に発表された日本の野球殿堂入りと二重の栄誉となった。

アジア人選手としては初めて。過去に野茂英雄、松井秀喜の両氏が候補入りしたが、得票率が足りず、資格を失っていた。

期待された史上2人目、野手としては初の満票選出には1票足りなかったが、恨みは言うまい。日本の殿堂でも、満票選出は一人もいない。イチローさんには26人が投票しなかった。祝辞で殿堂入りの先輩、王貞治さんが「中にはへそ曲がりもいる」と述べた通りだろう。

イチローさんの功績は揺るぎない。多くの米安打記録を塗り替え続け、その度、ジョージ・シスラー、シューレス・ジョー・ジャクソン、タイ・カッブ、ウィリー・キーラーといった100年の歴史をまたぐ先人の名を現代に蘇（よみがえ）らせてきた。

パワー全盛の大リーグにあって、広角に安打を放つ技術、忍者にも擬せられたスピード豊かな卓越した走塁、「レーザービーム」に象徴される強肩や「エリア51」と称された広い外野守備範囲などで、野球の多様な魅力を体現してきた。競技に向かう真摯（しんし）な姿勢は、日米の選手らの模範ともなった。

日本の殿堂入りは、阪神大震災30年と重なった。

あの年、オリックス選手だったイチローさんは「がんばろう神戸」の合言葉の下で、首位打者、打点王、盗塁王を獲得してリーグ優勝に貢献し、翌年、日本一を達成して被災者を歓喜に包んだ。そして「震災が僕の野球人生を大きく変えた。その経験を、子供たちに伝えていきたい」と述べた。

米の殿堂入りでは野球で得られる喜びを「多くの人と出会えること。出会いが自分を作ってくれたことが何よりの財産であり、楽しいこと」と語った。

現役時代は「孤高」の印象もあったイチローさんだが、引退後は各地を回っての高校野球の指導や、女子野球の普及に力を尽くしている。若い選手らとの「出会いの場」の創出を使命としているようだ。

野球人口の減少が懸念される中、野球の魅力を広める役割が自身の責務となった。日米での殿堂入りを、そう受け止めてもらえれば、野球界は最高の伝道師を得ることになる。
